As wedding planners who design bold, colorful weddings for untraditional couples, we may be biased. We’re seeing an uptick in couples choosing color for their big days, and we couldn’t be more excited about its renaissance.
Color can completely transform a space, and weddings are no exception. Color can make your wedding feel more true to you and your partner. But if not selected carefully, colors can start to clash or completely overwhelm the space. Luckily for you, we’ve got the best inspiration and tips to keep your wedding colorful and cohesive.
The biggest trick to having a colorful and cohesive wedding: it has to be done intentionally.
When you intentionally curate your color palette, every detail works together to bring the day to life. Everything from florals to table settings to the overall flow of the space feels elevated and completely cohesive, not overwhelming. Now, the design feels like an experience rather than just being “pretty”.
As wedding planners, the design phase is always one of our favorite parts of the process. We love watching our couples’ vision come to life through color palettes, floral concepts, tabletop inspiration, and meaningful details.
Here are our tips (along with gorgeous wedding inspiration!) to take when you’re designing your colorful wedding:
ADD SIGNAGE AND DAY-OF DETAILS
We always encourage our clients to prioritize “need to have” signage for moments that really make an impact. One of those must-haves is a seating chart or an escort card table– your guests need to know where to sit. So, you might as well make it pretty! Think about individual menus for guests and table markers to tie in colors as well without feeling overwhelming or random.
USE THEMATIC TABLESCAPES TO ADD PATTERN AND LAYERING
Speaking of tables, use tablescapes to your advantage! Tablescapes are decor, of course, but they can do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to adding color and personality, too. You can layer patterns, textures, and color to tell your story and bring everything together. Tablescapes can start to look or feel overwhelming quickly if not thoughtfully designed, so make sure your wedding planner has an eye for impeccable design.

ADD A POP OF COLOR WITH FLORALS
Florals are one of the easiest ways to bring a colorful wedding palette across your venue. Most of Alyssa and Chris’ wedding was neutral, so their pink and peach bouquets and arrangements stood out strongly from the rest of the venue. They carried this theme in a similar way across their cake to bring it all together! It’s the perfect way to add a pop of color for those who want it, but don’t want to have a wedding full of color.
BRING IN THE LITTLE DETAILS TO BRING IT ALL TOGETHER
Of course the big details matter, but the little things can help add an extra touch of polish to your design! Your guests will notice and appreciate even the smallest touches you add. Think about where you can add tiny touches to bring colors, patterns, or textures together across your venue.
Erika and Jim’s vintage lakeside celebration in New Hampshire is the perfect example of this. Everything fits into their gorgeous white and blue color scheme. They created themed matchbooks, brought in furniture that spoke to the color and patterns, and even used taper candles in the same shade. Because their color palette is cohesive, everything looked stunning put together, instead of overwhelming. Again, these little details seem small, but they pull together the entire theme seamlessly (and your guests will adore and remember them long after the day is over).
